Foot Orthoses Details

Foot orthoses, also commonly referred to as "Orthotics", comprise of a specially fitted insert or footbed for a shoe. Foot Orthoses are specially designed to provide support for the foot by distributing pressure or realigning foot joints while the patient is standing, walking or running. Podiatrists will often choose to supply Foot Orthoses for patients who have chronic foot or leg problems that interfere with the health and functionality of their feet.

This Foot Orthoses Module raises an awareness of the research, principles, effects, materials selection, manufacture techniques, and limitations of foot orthoses which is essential for successful orthotic device provision in podiatry.

Aims and Objectives

Successful completion of the Orthotics Module will allow the candidate to demonstrate an ability to assess the clinical options available to allow successful and cost effective treatment outcomes.

Through a structured process of questions, answers, and explanations the successful completion of the Orthotics Module will enable you to:

  • Demonstrate an understanding that orthotic intervention should be based on the pathology and the mechanism of injury.
  • Assess the suitability of orthotic intervention by assessing, then adjusting the kinematics and kinetics of patients that underpin the pathology.
